Liner Notes · No. 012
Quick hall pass: the #1 he says he detested got a blocked parody, a Simpsons rescue, a country #1 and a 2026 victory lap. Here's the B-side.
📰 FAST FACTS
TRACK 1 · The cameo
Mellencamp said no to Weird Al's royal-wedding parody in 1983, and a viral cover turned the chili-dog line into its own bit.
The rejection: In 1983, "Weird Al" Yankovic planned to put a parody of the song on his debut album: "Chuck and Diane," about Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Mellencamp didn't give permission. So Al reused the idea in an original song, "Buckingham Blues." A man with an accordion and a perm, turned away at the door. 1983 was a tough room.
The comeback: Al didn't let it go. Twenty years later he got his shot at the song, on a TV show you have definitely watched, in an episode that went on to win an Emmy. Hold that thought.
The chili dog: One line from the song has its own afterlife. Comedian Tom McGovern went viral with a cover that swaps out most of the lyrics for the chili-dog line. Just that. Over and over. Others pointed out that a performer named Clownvis had been doing a similar bit for years. Vulture even went hunting for the real Tastee Freez. The most quoted snack in rock, and it still can't get a straight answer.
So, Weird Al's second try. Who was it about?
No Googling. We'll know.

TRACK 2 · The live one
These days it's one man, one acoustic guitar and a crowd doing his backing vocals, from Farm Aid 40 to a black-tie awards show.
The setup: These days he plays it solo acoustic. Reviews of his shows at the iHeartRadio Theater in New York and Forest Hills Stadium in Queens describe Mellencamp alone with an acoustic guitar while the whole crowd sings the chorus as his backing vocalists. The most efficient band in rock: one guy, plus several thousand unpaid volunteers who all know the words.
Farm Aid 40: On September 20, 2025, he played "Jack & Diane" at Farm Aid 40 at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, in a set with "Small Town" and "Pink Houses." He co-founded Farm Aid with Willie Nelson and Neil Young in 1985. Forty years of the same cause. Most of us can't keep a gym membership for forty days.
The awards show: At the iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 26, 2026, he played an acoustic "Jack & Diane" and "Pink Houses" and told the crowd to sing along to anything they knew. Black tie, acoustic guitar, an entire awards show doing his backing vocals.
The tour: The Dancing Words Tour (The Greatest Hits) opened July 10, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Jack and Diane" was announced in the setlist, and the tour trailer shows a whole diner singing it. The AJC's review of the August 1 show in Alpharetta counted nearly forty songs. Forty songs. Bring a snack. Possibly a chili dog.
TRACK 3 · Cover watch
Jessica Simpson borrowed the riff, Weird Al finally got his parody on The Simpsons, and Jake Owen took it to #1 in feathered hair.

TRACK 4 · Where are they now
An iHeartRadio Icon Award presented by his daughter, a greatest-hits tour that finally put this song on the poster, and still on the Farm Aid bill.
The award: On March 26, 2026, he received the iHeartRadio Icon Award, reportedly the first of his 50-year career. His daughter Teddi Mellencamp presented it and said he "saved my life." He handed the trophy back to her and told her, "that's yours."
The tour: The Dancing Words Tour (The Greatest Hits) ran July 10 to August 12, 2026, 19 US cities, ending in Mountain View, California. It was his first big hits tour after years of theater shows. After four decades of mixed feelings about this song, he finally put it on the poster.
The farm: As a Farm Aid board member, he was on the bill for Farm Aid in Virginia Beach on September 26, 2026, with Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Dave Matthews.
The records: His latest studio album is Orpheus Descending (2023). In May 2025 he posted a lyric reading of a song called "Eden," labeled as from a 2026 album called Orphan Train; no release date has been confirmed. And in 2026, a 2-CD anthology, American Dream: The MainMan Recordings 1976-77, collected his Johnny Cougar years, including the once-shelved album The Kid Inside. The fake name he shed, now a deluxe box. That's the music business.
